2-(Hydroxyimino)naphthalen-1(2H)-one is a model system that can be used to study the photochromic properties of hydroxyimino naphthoquinones. It has been shown that this compound undergoes an oxidative DNA reaction with hydrochloric acid and sodium salts in the presence of sunlight, producing a color change from yellow to red. The photochromization process can also be activated by radiation and electrochemical detection. 2-(Hydroxyimino)naphthalen-1(2H)-one is stable under acidic conditions, but reactivity increases under basic conditions. This chemical has also been used as a metal chelate in radiation activation experiments.
