Bithionol is a tautomeric form of bithionol disodium salt. The conjugates are bound to the myristic acid in the fatty alcohols and form a polymeric matrix. This drug is used as a diagnostic agent for the detection of cancer, especially prostate cancer, and other fatty acid-related diseases. Bithionol has been shown to be effective in inhibiting tumor growth by bioassay in tissues from rats injected with cancer cells. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects that may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
