Beta-methyllevulinic acid is a constant metabolite of the staphylococcus bacteria. It is produced in vivo through the metabolism of levulinic acid by S-adenosylmethionine. Beta-methyllevulinic acid has been shown to have anticancer activity and antifungal properties. It also prevents the synthesis of prenyl diphosphate synthase, which is an enzyme that is involved in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. In vitro studies have shown that beta-methyllevulinic acid can inhibit cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
