2-(2-Ethoxyphenoxy)ethylamine is a chiral compound that is homochiral. It has been used as an intermediate to produce tamsulosin, which is a drug for the treatment of urinary retention and benign prostatic hyperplasia. 2-(2-Ethoxyphenoxy)ethylamine has been modified to give it different effects. For example, when it is converted into its acid salt form, it produces symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhoea. When it is made into its racemic form, it has antagonistic properties with respect to alpha-adrenergic receptors and can be used for the treatment of prostate cancer or urinary retention. This compound crystallizes in solid form and can be found in the sulfonic acid or sulfonic form as an intermediate.
