- Benzeneacetaldehyde, 3-nitro-.alpha.-oxo-
- (3-Nitrophenyl)(oxo)acetaldehyde
3-Nitrophenyl-oxo-acetaldehyde is a synthetic diketone that reversibly binds to the mitochondrial membrane. It is synthesized by reacting 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and nitroethane in the presence of anhydrous ammonium acetate. The reaction products are chloride, phloridzin, lysine residues, and dicarboxylates. 3-Nitrophenyl-oxo-acetaldehyde has been used to reconstitute the red blood cell membrane as well as to inhibit the interaction between cytochrome c and cardiolipin. This compound also inhibits the electron transport chain at complex I.
