Methylionene is a genotoxic compound that inhibits p450 activity and has inhibitory properties. It also inhibits the enzyme activity of DNA polymerase, which prevents DNA synthesis. Methylionene has been shown to cause mutation in bacterial strain, such as Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium TA98 and Escherichia coli WP2 uvrA/pKM101. This compound also induces mutations in vitro assays on mammalian cells and in vivo assays on human subjects. Methylionene is not mutagenic in a wst-1 assay or a body mass index study.
