It was found to be an ethyl xanthate amplifier and the potassium salt of 3APT is used in preparation of the antibiotic phleomycin. The reactions of this substance with orthoesters lead to the formation of a number of interesting compounds, such as 3-(2-aminoethyl)isoxazolidines, which have been shown to be useful for the synthesis of various heterocycles.
