tert-Butyl cyclobutylcarbamate is a carbamate that binds to the glutamate receptor, which is found in the central nervous system. It has been shown to be an agonist at this receptor and may be useful as an antidepressant and an anti-anxiety drug. This compound has also been shown to inhibit glutamatergic neurotransmission by binding to the metabotropic glutamate receptors. This inhibition causes decreased production of nitric oxide, a molecule that triggers inflammation and pain. Tert-butyl cyclobutylcarbamate is structurally similar to tert-butyl carbamate, which is used as a building block for many organic compounds. Tert-butyl cyclobutylcarbamate can also react with nucleophilic groups such as amines or alcohols in order to form carboxylic acid derivatives known as tert-butyl esters.
