3-Bromo-4-methoxybenzoyl chloride is a potent and selective thrombin inhibitor. It binds to the active site of thrombin, preventing the formation of an enzyme-inhibitor complex with the enzyme catalytic triad. This binding prevents the activation of factor Xa and leads to a reduction in blood clotting. 3-Bromo-4-methoxybenzoyl chloride has been shown to inhibit human thrombin by x-ray crystallography, x-ray crystallography studies, and molecular modeling studies. The compound also inhibits the activity of prothrombin, although it does not affect other serine proteases such as trypsin or chymotrypsin.
