2-(2-Hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazine is a molecule that can be used as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy. It has been shown to have anti-cancer properties when irradiated by light. 2-(2-Hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazine is an intramolecular hydrogen acceptor and forms the singlet excited state with oxygen (singlet oxygen). The lifetime of this excited state is dependent on the solvent and is detectable in solvents such as ethanol or acetone. The singlet oxygen reacts with unsaturated lipids in cell membranes to form peroxy radicals which initiate lipid peroxidation. This process leads to cell death.
