5,7-Dichlorokynurenic acid is a compound that is structurally related to the amino acid glycine. It binds to the α1 subunit of the voltage-dependent calcium channels and inhibits the opening of these channels in response to depolarization. This leads to a decrease in cytosolic calcium levels, which has been shown to be involved in granule neuron development and function. 5,7-Dichlorokynurenic acid also has been shown to have agonist binding sites on NMDA receptors, which are involved in hippocampal formation and glutamate neurotransmission.
