It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of ion channels and is used as a research tool to study the interactions between proteins. Farnesyl thiotriazole has been shown to activate nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in vitro, but it does not have any effect on muscle cells in vivo. Farnesyl thiotriazole also inhibits the enzyme phospholipase A2, which activates inflammatory reactions.
