It binds to the catalytic site of RNA polymerase and inhibits bacterial growth. This binding leads to a decrease in bacterial cell size and a decrease in the production of proteins in the bacterial cells. AM 114 also inhibits penicillin-binding protein (PBP) from Staphylococcus aureus, which may be an additional mechanism for its antibacterial effects.
