[(4,6-Dihydroxypyrimidin-2-yl)thio]acetic acid is an inhibitor of phosphatases. It has been found to be a competitive and reversible inhibitor of phosphatase 1 (EC 3.1.3.16), which is responsible for the dephosphorylation of inositol polyphosphates and phosphoinositides, such as phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K). This inhibits PI3K activity, which leads to decreased production of proteins that are important for cell growth and proliferation. [(4,6-Dihydroxypyrimidin-2-yl)thio]acetic acid has been shown to have antiviral potency against human cytomegalovirus (CMV). Impurities found in [(4,6-dihydroxypyrimidin-2-yl)thio]acetic acid include caffeine and erdosteine.
