This compound reacts with electrophiles such as oxygen, chlorine, and bromine. The reaction forms a crosslinked structure that is resistant to further reaction with these electrophiles. 2-Methylbenzyl mercaptan has also been shown to react with amines and form desulfurized products through transfer of a methyl group from the mercaptan to the amine.
