4-Hydroperoxy-2(E)-nonenal is a lipid hydroperoxide that is produced by the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is a reactive compound that can form alkoxy radicals through interaction with oxygen and other compounds. 4-Hydroperoxy-2(E)-nonenal has been shown to be present in colorectal adenocarcinoma cells, where it may play a role in the formation of DNA adducts. It can be detected by analytical chemistry methods such as gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy. 4-Hydroperoxy-2(E)-nonenal has also been found to be produced by mammalian cells during oxidative stress and may play an important role in cell death pathways.
