Pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate) is a molecule that has been shown to be a photosensitizer in plasma mass spectrometry. It is able to bind to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and activate them, which can lead to an increase in blood pressure. The carbonyl group of pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate) can form hydrogen bonding interactions with the hydroxy group of 3-mercaptopropionic acid, which may be responsible for its ability to reduce water vapor. This molecule is also able to generate energy efficiently by absorbing light, as well as produce asymmetric synthesis reactions.
