4-Methyl-1-phenyl-2-pentanol is a surfactant that is used as a component in microcapsules. It interacts with the mercapto group on the surface of the microcapsule and with the stilbene derivatives to form an acidic ph. This acidity allows it to remove proteinuria, which can be caused by some detergent compositions. 4-Methyl-1-phenyl-2-pentanol has also been found to have deodorizing properties. This may be due to its ability to interact with the alcohol group on proteins and thereby break down protein molecules into their constituent amino acids. The breakdown of proteins in this way leads to a reduction in the odor emitted by urine.
