Mercury(II) fluoride is used in organic synthesis as a catalyst for acetonitrile and chlorine reactions. This reaction mechanism is called the trifluoromethylthiolation reaction. Mercury(II) fluoride can be used to coat surfaces and create high-lipophilicity coatings due to its monofluoride nature.
Mercury(II) fluoride can be used as a radioisotope for medical imaging because of its long half-life and low emission rate of gamma rays.
