(R)-Methyl 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetate is a short-chain ester that can be used in the synthesis of clopidogrel. It has been shown to bind to active sites on the enzyme dehydrogenase, which is responsible for the conversion of (S)-Methyl 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetate into (R)-Methyl 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetate. The binding increases reaction time and substrate concentration and may lead to a more efficient reaction. In addition, this substrate has demonstrated an ability to bind to enzymes with different binding sites. This property may be useful in asymmetric synthesis, where one enantiomer binds preferentially over the other.
