5-Nitro isophthalic acid dimethyl ester (NOIP) is an esterase inhibitor that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. NOIP has been shown to inhibit carboxylesterases, lipases, and phospholipases A2. It also inhibits glyoxalase I, which catalyzes the conversion of glyoxal to D-lactate. The inhibition of these enzymes leads to a decrease in the production of reactive oxygen species or reactive nitrogen species. This agent also prevents the formation of nitroso compounds by reacting with nitric oxide and blocking its action as a biocidal agent. NOIP can be immobilized on solid supports for use in organic synthesis reactions.
