3,4-Dimethyl-5-pentyl-2-furanundecanoic acid is a fatty acid that is found in catfish. It has been shown to have reactive properties and can be used as a biomarker for oxidative stress. 3,4-Dimethyl-5-pentyl-2-furanundecanoic acid has been found to induce mitochondrial dysfunction in neutrophils and red blood cells, and can be used as an indicator of peroxide production by organisms. This fatty acid has also been shown to affect the function of brain cells, including long chain fatty acids. It may help with Alzheimer’s disease by preventing protein carbonylation and extracellular accumulation of beta amyloid proteins.
