4-Nitro-DL-phenylalanine Hydrate is a drug substance that is used in the manufacture of zolmitriptan, which is a selective 5HT1B/1D receptor agonist. 4-Nitro-DL-phenylalanine Hydrate has been shown to be genotoxic and hypersil, which may be due to its use as an electrospray ionization (ESI) reagent. This impurity can be eliminated by recrystallization or by using other analytical methods such as gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The validation and quantitation of this impurity has been carried out in order to ensure that it does not exceed the maximum allowable limit.
