Musellactone is a chemically and structurally novel terpenoid that was first isolated from the bark of L. lasiopetala. Musellactone has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and xanthine oxidase, two enzymes that are involved in tumor growth. Musellactone also inhibits the proliferation of cancer cell lines, but not normal cells. The inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase is due to the structural similarity between musellactone and physostigmine, an alkaloid used as an anti-tumor agent. This compound has shown significant cytotoxic effects against human carcinoma cells in vitro, which may be caused by its ability to induce apoptosis.
