Direct Yellow 44 (DY44) is a reactive dyestuff that belongs to the group of quinacridone dyes. It is a sodium salt of an alkynyl-substituted benzoyl chloride. The carbonyl group at the 3-position of the benzoic acid moiety is involved in the reaction with sodium carbonate, forming a copper complex. DY44 undergoes an oxidative polymerization reaction with polyvinyl acetate and copper ions. The dichroic and polarizing properties are due to the presence of two reactive groups, hydroxyl and alkynyl groups. DY44 has been shown to react with chlorine atoms under acidic conditions, forming a polymer film on the surface of nylon fabrics.
