1-(2-Chloro-ethyl)-4-(tetrahydro-pyran-4-yl)-pyridinium chloride (CPC) is an analytical reagent that is used in the quantitative analysis of pyridinium ions. It has been shown to be a good alternative to the traditional use of chloroform as a solvent. CPC is prepared by reacting pyridine with chloroethanol and then adding hydrochloric acid. CPC can be used in flow systems and it has been shown to be effective for the determination of pyridinium ions in human serum. CPC is also useful as an ionophore for liposomal nanoparticulate compositions, which are designed to deliver drugs, vaccines, and other therapeutics into cells via endocytosis. The cetylpyridinium salt of CPC has been shown to have strong acidic properties.
