- Thiophene, 2,5-dimethoxy-
2,5-dimethoxythiophene is a chemical compound with the formula CHSCH. It is a colorless liquid with an odor that has been described as "fishy". 2,5-Dimethoxythiophene is used in organic chemistry as a chlorinating agent and an oxidizing agent. It is also used to make heterocycles such as maleic anhydride, furan and pyrrole.
2,5-dimethoxythiophene can be synthesized by the reaction of acetaldehyde dimethyl acetal with sulfur dioxide. The yield of this reaction depends on the nature of the solvent and the conditions. 2,5-Dimethoxythiophene reacts with chlorine gas to form 2-chloro-2,5-dimethoxyphenol (chlorothiophenol) and hydrogen chloride. This reaction can be catalysed by copper(II) chloride at room temperature or by copper(II) sulfate
