6-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-methylquinoline is a cyanine dye that is used for labelling biomolecules. It can be synthesized by functionalization of the 6-hydroxymethyl 2-methylquinoline with an alkyne group. The resulting dye has high quantum yields, good solubility, and strong fluorescence. 6-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-methylquinoline can be used to label proteins, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates by covalent attachment. This compound is also used in fluorescent imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy and two-photon excitation microscopy.
