Dimethicone is a silicone polymer that is used in a variety of products. It is used to coat surfaces, including medical devices and implants, to reduce friction, prevent sticking, or as a release agent. Dimethicone also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cells by radical chain reactions. In addition, it can be made into ultra-thin films with nanosized particles that have excellent optical properties and are luminescent. This property makes it useful for use in coatings for angiogenic factors that promote new blood vessel growth. The dimethicone polymer is also able to form enolate anions that are similar to those found in growth factor molecules and can inhibit the proliferation of cells such as those found in cancerous tumors.
