Thioredoxin reductase is a protein that belongs to the group of glutathione reductases. It is an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of oxidized thioredoxins, and is found in bacteria, plants, and animals. Thioredoxin reductase has been shown to be active against chronic inflammatory diseases and cancer cells. The enzyme also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribonucleotide on their DNA strand and preventing them from synthesizing proteins. Thioredoxin reductase has been used as a potential antibacterial agent because it can bind to silver ions and form a quaternary ammonium compound with them. This compound binds to bacterial dna gyrase and prevents it from carrying out its function.
