(+/-)-7-Azabicyclo[4.2.0]octan-8-on is a hydroxy group, lactams, isomerisation, lactam, β-amino acid, β-lactam enantiomer that has been shown to have antibiotic properties. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting protein synthesis. (+/-)-7-Azabicyclo[4.2.0]octan-8-on has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens strains as well as other gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis. The hydroxy group on the compound is susceptible to chemical ionization in mass spectrometry experiments, which can lead to fragmentation of the molecule into smaller fragments that are easier to identify by
