Potassium tricyanomethanide is an alkoxycarbonyl compound that reacts with anions to form the corresponding cation. It has a molecular weight of 130.08 and a melting point of −63.5 °C, and exhibits thermal expansion properties. The reaction mechanism for this compound is not well-known, but it is assumed to be a nucleophilic substitution reaction involving acetonitrile as the nucleophile. Potassium tricyanomethanide can be used in electrophotographic applications due to its luminescence properties, which are determined by its nitro group and hydrocarbon group. This compound also undergoes bond cleavage reactions with trialkylsilyl groups or carbon dioxide to generate potassium cyanide or carbon monoxide, respectively.
