1,7-Diazaspiro[4.4]nonane is a cyclic compound with a diastereomeric pair of enantiomers that has been used in the synthesis of chiral catalysts. It can be prepared by reacting an azomethine with an amine in the presence of a base or by hydrolyzing a diazoacetate ester. The two enantiomers are mirror images of each other and have different solubility and reactivity properties. 1,7-Diazaspiro[4.4]nonane is used as a catalyst for various reactions including hydrogenation, hydrosilylation, and asymmetric reduction. It is also used to synthesize pharmaceutical compounds such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). 1,7-Diazaspiro[4.4]nonane is also found in the human nervous system where it plays a role in neurotransmitter release and maintenance of the neuronal membrane potential
