16-Bromo-1-hexadecanol is a quaternary ammonium salt that has antibacterial activity. It is a hydrophilic molecule that behaves like a cationic surfactant. It can be used as an antibacterial agent against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, due to its ability to disrupt the cell membrane of these bacteria by penetrating through the lipid bilayer. 16-Bromo-1-hexadecanol is also able to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other acid resistant strains, such as Mycobacterium avium complex. This compound can also be used to treat acne by inhibiting bacterial growth in the pores of the skin. 16-Bromo-1-hexadecanol acts by binding to bacterial membranes, which leads to increased permeability and subsequent leakage of cellular contents from the cells.
