4-Hydroxycephalotaxine is a tetracyclic compound that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the ribosome. It has been shown to have significant activity against both myeloid and lymphoid leukemia cells in vitro, but clinical studies are needed to determine its efficacy as an anticancer drug. The synthetic methods for 4-hydroxycephalotaxine have been developed. This compound can exist in two chiral forms, R and S. The R form has been shown to have higher potency than the S form, but it is more difficult to synthesize and purify.
