Virustomycin A is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits the growth of trypanosomes by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is active against immunosuppressive activities in vitro, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of trichomonas. Virustomycin A has also been shown to exhibit potent activity against soil microorganisms, such as bafilomycin a1-sensitive bacteria, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis. Virustomycin A is insoluble in water and must be administered orally or intravenously.
