Fluconazole is an antifungal drug which belongs to the group of azoles. It inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a component of fungal cell membranes. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of toxic levels of 14-alpha-methyl sterol, which induces cell death. Fluconazole is active against a wide variety of fungi, including Candida and Cryptococcus species, as well as other types of yeast such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Fluconazole also inhibits the replication of viruses and can be used for chemotherapy treatments in combination with other drugs.
