4,5-Dichloropicolinamide is a cancer drug that belongs to the class of drugs known as alkylating agents. It has been shown to disrupt the DNA of cancer cells and inhibit their growth. 4,5-Dichloropicolinamide also inhibits fetal development in pregnant women by increasing the levels of certain hormones in maternal serum.
4,5-Dichloropicolinamide is not water soluble and has low bioavailability. The drug is metabolized into carboxylic acid metabolites that bind to proteins with high affinity, making it difficult for the body to excrete them. This can lead to accumulation of 4,5-dichloropicolinate in tissues such as the liver, kidneys, and bone marrow leading to toxic side effects such as bone marrow suppression and an increased risk for developing leukemia (leukemia).
