Disodium terephthalate is the sodium salt of terephthalic acid and has a redox potential of 1.2 volts. In the presence of oxygen, it reacts with sodium carbonate to produce sodium terephthalate and carbon dioxide gas. Disodium terephthalate is used in wastewater treatment for its synergistic effect with glycol ethers, which are also added to the water. Disodium terephthalate is also used as a raw material for polymers that can be processed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and fluorescence probe technology. This compound has been shown to be an effective fluorescence probe for DNA in solution, making it useful for structural analysis purposes.
