Ethyl (E)-4-oxopent-2-enoate is an organic compound that is used as a reagent. It is an analog of the organomercurial ethyl (E)-4-oxovalerate and reacts with sulfhydryl groups to form organomercurials. This reaction can be performed by adding triethyllead to the reactants, which will cause nucleophilic displacement of the lead from the organomercurial. Ethyl (E)-4-oxopent-2-enoate has been used as a reactive reagent in chemical reactions such as arylation.
