- Pyridine, 5-Chloro-2-(Chloromethyl)-
5-Chloro-2-(chloromethyl)pyridine is a member of the class of benzene ring substituted pyridines that inhibit the replication of hepatitis C virus (HCV). It was found to be an active anti-HCV agent against HCV genotype 1b, 2a and 3a. 5-Chloro-2-(chloromethyl)pyridine is a pharmacokinetic prodrug that undergoes hydrolysis by esterases to form 5-chloropyridine. The crotonate group in this molecule has been shown to be critical for its antiviral activity. There are many analogues of 5-chloro-2-(chloromethyl)pyridine that have been investigated as potential anti-HCV agents with varying degrees of success.
