2-(o-Tolyl)pyridine is a compound that can be used to synthesize other organic molecules. It has two isomers, 2-methylpyridine and 3-methylpyridine. The 2-methylpyridine isomer has a boronic acid group attached to the nitrogen atom. This group can be used to form a covalent bond with another boronic acid group on a different molecule. Cross-coupling of 2-(o-tolyl)pyridine with boronic acid derivatives yields biphenyls, which are important in the manufacture of plastics and dyes. This compound can also be acetoxylated with acetic anhydride, followed by reductive elimination from the acetate ester to give an alcohol.
2-(o-Tolyl) pyridine can be obtained by reacting benzene with o-chlorophenol and trimethylborane in the presence of copper chloride
