Ytterbium(III) chloride is a chemical compound that contains hydrogen bonding interactions. It is a white solid with a melting point of about 700°C and a boiling point of about 1250°C. Ytterbium(III) chloride has been used in the detection of trace amounts of hydrogen gas. The reaction mechanism for this compound is not known, but it has been determined to be an acid complex, where the hydroxyl group donates protons and the trifluoroacetic acid accepts them. Ytterbium(III) chloride has also been used as an analytical method for determining particle size distribution, thermal expansion, and x-ray diffraction data.
