The compound is soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, chloroform, ether, and toluene. Diethyl 4-nitrophenyl malonate can be used as an intermediate for organic synthesis reactions because it can be converted into other compounds through various reactions such as hydrolysis, esterification, or reduction. X-ray diffraction studies have shown that the molecule consists of two tautomers: diethylmalonic acid and diethyl malonic acid dimethyl ester. The former is more stable than the latter due to its higher bond energies between each carbon atom in the molecule (hydrogen bonding).
