Ethyl 2-cyano-3-ethoxycrotonate is a reactive compound with antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is an activated ester of ethyl cyanoacetate, which reacts with nucleophilic groups on the surface of bacteria to form a pyrazole derivative. This reaction causes the death of the bacteria by inhibiting DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. The antimicrobial activity of this compound has been tested against S. epidermidis and other pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans. Ethyl 2-cyano-3-ethoxycrotonate also has antifungal properties due to its ability to inhibit chalcones, which are essential for fungal cell growth and reproduction.
