Labetalol is a non-steroidal, antihypertensive drug that is used to treat high blood pressure. Labetalol is a synthetic labile ester of 2-(4-(cyclopropanecarbonyl)phenyl)acetic acid and it has been shown to be absorbed by the human body through the process of diffusion. Labetalol has been found in various tissues, including biliary and faeces, as well as in plasma concentrations. It is eliminated from the body after conjugation with glucuronide or sulphate, with an elimination phase half-life of about 3 hours. The alcohol group on labetalol can be oxidized to a carboxylic acid which can be conjugated with glucuronic acid or sulphate. Labetalol also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
