2-(bromomethyl)pyrazine is a biomolecule that has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of tumour cell lines by depleting the cells of transfer reactions. It also induces apoptosis in tumour cells, which may be due to its ability to induce the expression of proteins such as HSP70, survivin, and raf-1. 2-(bromomethyl)pyrazine also inhibits cancer cell growth in vivo. This compound is hydrated, which enables it to cross the blood-brain barrier and enter into brain tissue. It has been shown that 2-(bromomethyl)pyrazine can be used as a photosensitiser for photodynamic therapy (PDT).
