The synthesis of 1-(pyrrolidin-2-yl)ethanone starts with the reaction of pyrrolidine with ethanal in aqueous solution. The first step is the conversion of pyrrolidine to an enamine, followed by the addition of ethanal in a second step. In the third step, water is eliminated and the product is formed. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) can be used as a catalyst for this reaction. Cyclic ethers are synthesized from 1-(pyrrolidin-2-yl)ethanone using various methods, such as by reacting it with carboxylic acids or esters. This compound has been found to have flavours similar to those of citric acid or vanillin. Mechanistic studies have shown that 1-(pyrrolidin-2-yl)ethanone reacts with ornithine to form an amide, which undergoes hydrolysis
