Secologanic acid is a lonicerae japonicae extract that contains iridoid compounds, such as syncytial virus infection. It has been shown to be an anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits the release of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by binding to cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1). Secologanic acid also exhibits antimicrobial activity against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. The molecular modeling study of secologanic acid has revealed its three dimensional structure, which may explain its anti-inflammatory mechanism. Secologanic acid is effective for the treatment of dry weight reduction in mice infected with camptotheca acuminata.
