1-[Nitroso(2-oxopropyl)amino]propan-2-one is a nitrosating agent that, in experimental models, has been shown to induce liver and pancreatic lesions. This compound is an experimental model for carcinogenic potential. 1-[Nitroso(2-oxopropyl)amino]propan-2-one binds to the dinucleotide phosphate DNA polymerase, an enzyme involved in DNA replication and repair. It also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the rat liver microsomes. Rats were given a single dose of 1-[nitroso(2-oxopropyl)amino]propan-2-one and later exposed to ionizing radiation; this resulted in increased incidence of cancerous cells in the liver and pancreas. 1-[Nitroso(2-oxopropyl)amino]propan-2-one also induces histological changes in hamsters that are similar
